What is the minimum resolution formula for planetary cameras?

The minimum camera resolution for planetary cameras is 125 lines/mm divided by camera reduction ratio.

Example: 125 ÷ 24X = 5.2 block or nearest block

What is the minimum resolution formula for rotary cameras?

The minimum camera resolution for rotary cameras is 100 lines/mm divided by camera reduction ratio.

Example: 100 ÷ 24X = 4.1 block or nearest block

Maintaining
Can microfilm be cleaned or re-washed after it has been processed?

Yes, microfilm can be cleaned and re-washed to remove surface dirt if your film is in good physical condition. Care must be taken to inspect the film prior to cleaning. Splices, tears, rips, and curling can cause jams in the processor and lead to film damage and image loss. Cleaning may heal minor emulsion scratches in the gelatin layer. However, most scratches or abrasions on the emulsion will remain.

If you use your film for retrieval purposes in a microfilm reader, you should incorporate a daily cleaning procedure (refer to your operator’s manual).

Some reasons that microfilm can become dirty include:

  • Improper washing during processing
  • Poor/improper storage
  • Poor/improper storage
  • Improper film handling techniques
  • Dirty thread paths in film readers

Troubleshooting
Why do I get density variations and dirty film from my processor?

Irregular maintenance can cause density variations and dirty film. The following preventative maintenance procedures have been shown to prevent film density variations and reduce the appearance of dirty film coming out of the processor.

  1. Change the developer and fixer filters once a month with a 20-micron size filter. This allows the chemistry to turn over and provides good agitation.
  2. Change the water filter on the in-coming line to the processor once a month with a 5-micron filter. This keeps dirt out of the spray nozzles.
  3. Drain the sediment from the hot water heater every 3 months. Drain the sediment from the bottom of the tank for 10 seconds. You will see the water go from a milky white to a clear appearance. This eliminates water deposits from reaching the wash baths.
  4. Clean the wash tanks monthly with 1 cup of household bleach in each wash tank. This keeps algae from building up in wash tanks.
